A Long-Awaited Adieu

I write to bid farewell to a roller coaster year. Goodbye 2008, we are through. Goodbye to death and mediocrity. I’ve had my fill of you for a while, you’re no longer welcome here and I am glad to see you go. You saw me dull and unmotivated in a passionless rut, broken in grief and bent under circumstance, but you won’t see those things anymore.

You see, amidst the scars, scuffles and sending and receiving of sympathy cards you also sent my way opportunities to learn and grow. I was required to step up into new roles through loss, and I stumbled down my tumultuous path right into the arms of amazing and caring new friends who remind me of the person I am capable of being. Thanks to that, I have no use for you. Let’s make this a clean break – no lingering feelings, no late-night calls. Trust me; it will be better for both of us.

I am leaving you behind with no reservation. You can keep the self-deprecation, insecurities and weakness. I am boxing up the memories I wish to take with me – you know, Mozart's in the rain, meximartini nights, movie and macaroni Mondays and the like. My confidence, strength, sass, intelligence and altogether new-found awesomeness are coming with me as well. Oh, the ongoing lack of enthusiasm? Yeah, you can keep that and the ugly vase on the mantle too, I never liked it anyway.

Thank you 2008 for dealing me a hand that didn’t kill me, but definitely made me stronger. Goodbye and good riddance; I am ready for a new direction.
